In the 1970s, Beacon House, nestled in Leinster Square, Bayswater, London, functioned as a hostel for young people venturing to the city for employment. It was a home, a haven of safety and security, serving as an ideal base for newcomers to the city. These images spotlight a friendship group of young women residing in the hostel, curated from a broader picture set.

The series title was inspired by one of the subjects’ seen reading “The Women’s Room”, a novel authored by Marilyn French and published in 1977.
