It belongs to the family Dennstaedtiaceae and is one of the most widespread ferns globally, thriving in a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed areas.
Bracken fern is highly adaptable and can be found in diverse habitats throughout NSW, including coastal areas, mountains, and inland regions. It thrives in open areas with ample sunlight but can also tolerate some shade. It often colonises disturbed areas such as roadsides, logging sites, and abandoned fields.
While bracken fern provides habitat and food for some wildlife species, including insects and birds, it is considered an invasive species in many regions. Dense stands of bracken can out-compete native vegetation, reduce biodiversity, and alter ecosystem dynamics. In addition, bracken fern can be toxic to livestock if ingested in large quantities, as it contains carcinogenic compounds.
Despite its toxicity, bracken fern has been utilised by indigenous peoples for various purposes. Aboriginal Australians have traditionally used the fronds for weaving baskets, shelters, and other cultural artifacts. However, caution must be exercised when handling bracken fern, as contact with the plant can cause skin irritation in some individuals.
