BW photo print of Large Wolf Spider on floor carpet
Family Lycosidae. These are strong, agile hunters living on the ground in leaf litter or burrows.
They have eight eyes, four small ones lower down on the face, two large eyes above looking forward and two large, upward looking eyes further back.
Generally these species are drab coloured animals, well camouflaged against their background. They live mostly solitary and hunt alone. Some are opportunistic hunters pouncing upon prey as they find it or even chasing it over short distances. Some will wait for passing prey in or near the mouth of a burrow.
These images show a front view of the animal, including the characteristic 8 eyes set out in 3 rows, face, palpus and mandibles.
